Foreign Ministry Spokesman Kong Quan's Remarks on the Possible Burst of a Tibetan Lake Threatening Indian Villages
2004-08-14 00:00

Q: It is reported that a lake in Tibet is likely to burst its banks, threatening the neighboring Indian villages. Please confirm. What measures has the Chinese side taken?

A: Since July, the course of the Pareechu River in China's Tibet Autonomous Region has been clogged as a result of landslide from surrounding hills. The competent authorities of China attach great importance to the situation and the relevant departments of the Tibet Autonomous Region have sent several task forces to the site of the landslide for disaster-relief missions.

China has on several occasions informed the Indian side of the situation through diplomatic channels and recommended them to make necessary preparation for a possible disaster.
