His Majesty King Abdullah said Jordan is keen on strengthening economic and political ties with China which, he said, plays a constructive and important role in Middle Eastern Affairs. During a meeting with Mr. Li Zhaoxing, King Abdullah discussed prospects for joint development projects undertaken by the Chinese and Jordanian business communities. The Monarch called for the formation of a joint committee to arrive at a mechanism to bolster economic, commercial and political cooperation. The King referred to the Amman Message launched last year, describing it as representing the true image of Islam, a faith that advocates tolerance and moderation. Referring to the Middle East issue and peace efforts, King Abdullah underlined the importance of the roadmap peace plan for settling the Arab-Israeli conflict. The King and the Chinese minister reviewed efforts for reestablishing stability and security in Iraq and ongoing efforts to reform the UN. Li voiced China's appreciation of the King's endeavours to modernise Jordan and his efforts towards establishing peace in Palestine and Iraq. He said China was keen to strengthen ties with Jordan in all fields.

Li, who also signed a agreement of $2.4 million grant to finance Jordanian development projects with Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali, said China was determined to provide various aid programmes to Jordan to help strengthen bilateral relations. The .

The Chinese minister, who arrived late Friday evening, earlier held talks with his Jordanian counterpart Farouq Qasrawi. "We agreed on maintaining bilateral cooperation in various fields and discussed numerous issues including the political situation in the Middle East and our stands are almost identical," said Li, describing the meeting as important. "China is monitoring developments in the Middle East and working to achieve progress in the peace process within the framework of the roadmap peace initiative," Li added. Following the meeting, Qasrawi said they agreed on pursuing consultations on issues of common concern. He said the Kingdom appreciates China's role in the peace-making process and its support for the Arab people's legitimate rights. Qasrawi said China and Jordan are committed to help the Iraqi people and Iraq's provisional government in the ongoing efforts to reestablish stability and security. The Chinese minister said his country has taken measures to facilitate the travel of Chinese tourists to Jordan, to increase investment in the Kingdom and to import potash from the country, according to Qasrawi. China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, last December called for a special conference on the Middle East under the UN umbrella.

Jordan is the first leg of Li's regional tour, which will also take him to Israel, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon.
